When you think of the word "training" in potty training, always think of the "routine" that allows this process to be successful. Children adapt by routine like behaviors. What you do with them routinely, becomes their norm and they will grasp teachings quickly.
When To Start ?
"I will start when they are ready." Is a popular way to start training. I say start ASAP. Children are literally born ready to learn whatever it is you teach them. You are actually starting when "you" are ready and don't realize it. We get carried away sometimes putting it on our kids when in fact we are the ones slowing down their sponged like minds on learning certain things quicker. Taking your time is okay too of course but you really don't have to.
Children want to learn new things so teach them. Remember you are raising children to become successful adults. Don't be afraid of teaching them independence right away.
You can start as early as 6 months.
18 months is the perfect time to get your child on a regular toilet not kiddy potty.
Create a routine that works for your child's personality
It should take two weeks to fully potty train your child.
You start infants on solids at 4 months. By 6 months, infants pee less frequently and they are sitting up. Did you know many parents have started potty training their child at 6 months? Putting them on the kiddy potty at 6 months can quickly advance their training. By the time they walk, they become pros. The only thing about starting this early is that you will have to put them on and off the toilet until they can walk of course.
Most children start to walk between 10-13 months old. Children immediately become a sponge once they have developed walking motor skills. By 18 months, they have built a lot of strength through walking, climbing, squatting, and sitting up. Sitting them on a regular toilet by 18 months helps them to continue building upper and lower body strength. There is nothing to be afraid of. As long as they are supervised every time they will be fine on the toilet they see you sit on everyday.
I started potty training my boys at 18 months and it took two weeks to full potty train them here's how:
Tips Towards Creating a Routine
As soon as your toddler wake up put them on the toilet for 3-5 minutes every 30 minutes for a few hours a day. While they are on the toilet encourage them. Say "pee pee?" "poo poo?" "good job you are sitting on the potty big boy/girl". Start to clap and give high fives and thumbs up. Any longer than 3 to 5 minutes may aggravate your child in the process. You do not want them to get frustrated with the training. You want them to enjoy the process and feel like they are winning.
Stay off your phone and focus on them. This is crucial. Children know when you are not paying attention to them. What they need the most is your undivided attention to get through their training.
Make sure you and your spouse are on the same page and schedule. You do not want to confuse your child. Family must also be on board if they are staying over a relatives house. It helps when they are just as excited as you are and following the same routine fully and not lazy about it.
-Boys: Teach them to pee sitting down first because that way they will learn to poop and pee at the same time.
-Girls: Let them wear dresses while they potty train. It is easier for them than pulling down pants.
Make shocking noises while you pour some water in the toilet and fake it like they just peed if they are not peeing when you take them right away. That way they can start to go on command after a couple of times of faking it.
Monitor when they start to poop. Every parent/care taker know exactly when their child is starting to poop or around the time they typically go. It is important to get them on the toilet to finish moving their bowls there. You literally have to run and say poo poo? at the same time if you can tell that they are attempting to poo. They will understand why you are running too. Sit them on the toilet and say "wow you poo poo on the toilet good job!" Even if it’s has not come out yet gasp and say wooow and look in the toilet bowl. I promise you in a few days they will be coming up to you telling that they have to poop seeing your excitement to run them to the potty!
Get your child underwear of characters they love. This will help keep them excited about the training process. Allow them to pick out which underwear they would like to wear for the day.
Be okay with accidents. They will happen. DO NOT revert back to pull-ups because of accidents. Pull-ups should only be worn right before bed. Be quick with catching the accidents. After an accident, sit them on the potty so they can keep remembering to sit on the potty and say it to them. Stock up on cleaning products you will be using a lot of it. For at least a month after fully potty training your child, accidents may have you discouraged but its normal. If you experience more than a couple accidents a week, try cloth diapers to help with the training.
